It is now experience against youth (pace and acceleration) ... once the equilibrium is broken, Balde will make his true breakthrough ... Till then, he will have to compete against Alonso and Alba for playing minutes.

The thing with Balde he's well rounded, he doesn't make silly fouls, he can tackle, dribble can play anywhere on the left side during the game when he's in the advanced position he's actually playing as a winger, either speed and silk along with his crossing and good decision making is super talented, all he need is more games to develop his game more

@BeRelentless I didn't compare Messi to anyone. I don't know where did you get this idea from. I just wanted to say that all the things Alba was doing any LB can do them. Alba is not special at all. He wasn't supposed to dribble and pass. Or getting physical to win 2nd balls. He was attacking the space and giving the ball back to Messi. It doesn't take a world class LB to replace Alba.

He was so scared (of injury) that the moment an opposition player approached him, he quickly dispersed the ball away. Look at the explosive speed of Balde and his guts to take on 1v1. Fati totally lost that ! May Fati regains his confidence soonest ...

Still remember thinking this kid wouldnt cut it cos of his defensive frailties - he went back to Barca B, came back to Xavi's first team and has improved massively by then. Great player hopefully he continues to show out

It will be very very difficult for Jordi Alba to dislodge him from the left back position because he gives good passes, defend well and sends nice crosses overhead for his forwards unlike Alba who gives low and short ones to opponents or have it blocked.Alba hardly goes for aerial balls.He always turn his back to an opponents in in mid air tussles but Balde jumps and challenges for such balls.

Me imagino que al que se le ocurrió retrasar a Balde desde el extremo al lateral fue un entrenador que no le vio gol. Digo yo, porque tiene una velocidad, técnica en la conducción y en el regate, aparte del tremendo desparpajo, idóneo para cualquier extremo. Seguramente ese mismo entrenador es el que necesitó en su momento Adama Traore. Aunque quizás si se lo plantearon pero al chaval no le molaba eso de ser defensa. Una pena en todo caso porque hubiera sido un Devies o mismamente un Balde por derecha. Con esa fuerza, velocidad, regate y descaro al encarar… uff. Lo dicho, una pena.

If he play regularly, he can develop into one of the best LB. But he is only 18, so it won't be wise to trust him completely in big games. Give him 2 -3 seasons and back him up and he will no doubt be the best LB

Xavi is just being conservative. Developing as a defender at a very young age is much more difficult than doing so as an attacker. There is far less room for error. Especially at Allianz Arena, in his first ever champions league start, with all the expectation in the world for Barcelona to deliver after the heavy summer spending, it can be a lot of pressure and crack the kid. Suppose he had a bad game and was targeted all night by Bayern, the media would crucify him and he’d have lost all the confidence he’s built. So Xavi is building his confidence and oiling him up to be a starter slowly but surely. He will start our other big fixtures and by the time we face Bayern at home, I have no doubt he’ll start and terrorize that left flank.

@Mar Co I understand where you’re coming from I also want Balde to be first choice Left Back but I also understand why Xavi didn’t start Balde he didn’t want his confidence to be ruined because it’s a huge game for a young player.
