Jon Stewart speaks so well, with such clarity. I really don't think the causes he championed for 9/11 Responders, Vets & Burn Pits + others, would have had results without him. His humour, when he delivers it, is one of my top three. I miss him on late night tv. I just might sign up to Apple TV just to watch him.

The GOP isn't *out* of ideas, they have exactly one idea and it's working incredibly well for them so they stick with it. That idea is to use people's fear of things that are different from what they are familiar with to gain power.

@Basic info just keep in mind, the Democrats are not actively attacking the civil rights of marginalized communities, so it’s a bit of a bad comparison
Basic infoАй бұрын
@Gayonetta Not really. Racial politics and victim culture only serves to keep marginalized communities in resentment, divide the country. Instead of incentivizing people to work harder. I'm an immigrant and many see success through hard work, instead of constantly hoping for welfare and reparation.
GayonettaАй бұрын
@Basic info let’s not pretend all POC and marginalized groups are simply choosing to be victims. That lets the actual people benefiting from the status quo off the hook. Yes there are many that still succeed, but that doesn’t mean it was easy or couldn’t have been easy if racial discrimination and inequality wasn’t still an issue in this country

I disagree. I think it’s pretty clear Jon Stewart is accomplishing far more using his platform than most politicians accomplish in a lifetime. Besides, we all know the goal of being a politician isn’t to get things done for people - it’s to keep their corporate overlords happy
Audrey MuzingoАй бұрын
@ghost mall That's clearly the goal of _most_ politicians but a few refuse monetary influence. Too few, but it doesn't have to stay that way. I'm not even trying to argue that Jon should officially step into the shitshow, because I suspect you might be right about him being most effective exactly where he is. But we can't just accept that corporate bribery is the way it is and will be always.
CookАй бұрын
@ghost mall i think stewart should run because he's been gifted with talent and experiences that have made him a good, reasonable leader with an outlook I agree with. The paradox of leadership is that those who are best equipped to handle it are those who understand how incredible the responsibilities of leadership are and want to avoid it. Stewart has every right to run/not run because it's his life, but I believe that if you have a good head on your shoulders, you owe it to the people around you to step up before someone else who might not be as well-equipped gets placed in charge, and now the people you care have to go without the additional successes you would've brought them had you been in charge.
ghost mallАй бұрын
@Cook I think Stewart is an incredibly bright, passionate and thoughtful individual, and I think he’s found a way to leave his mark on society and materially make the country a better place without needing to run for office. It would be interesting if he decided to go that direction, but I think there’s a fallacy that says you need to be a politician to make change. Honestly, politicians are notorious for getting very little done while spending so much of our tax dollars
CookАй бұрын
@ghost mall i disagree, politicians are the only people who can change the lives of millions overnight by signing a document I'm not saying stewart needs to do anything, but if he's accomplished this much with the influence he has, it is reasonable to assume he would accomplish much more with even more influence. If it's not something he's interested that's fine, but your entire existence revolves around politics and the decisions made by politicians--being one of them is one of the most critical roles on the planet.

I generally like Jon and his line about "It's hard to not be angry at the people that distract from the real things that people face with weaponized nonsense..." this could literally be said by any citizen on either side of the aisle or by independents about either party... both sides will need to find a middle ground and could do better at trying to understand what is valuable to the others...
DTFaux Classic2 ай бұрын
Not every issue has a middle ground, and Jon's initial point is that there's not much hope for any progress, much less any compromise, with a party that has no intent to govern in good faith. Fear-mongering over things like CRT, trans people, and the like are distractions.

Fareed's "you sound angry" charge says so much. As soon as Jon mentions racial injustice and our refusal to genuinely address it, he's angry. There is an implicit admission that the content of Jon's words are things to be angry about, even when delivered calmly and with a tongue-in-cheek chuckle. But since Fareed does not share the outrage the content of Jon's word's warrant, and is in fact made comfortable by said content, he zeros in on the anger in lieu of what warrants it.

What doesn't kill you fosters the growth of odd and perhaps dangerous coping skills and a dark sense of humor.

We need more moderates to pop up and bonk both sides on the head and tell them to get it together. Jon can do that but he isn't really there. he is still very politically slanty. more so now because I think he got scared back after he was called a right winger and racist after his epic monologue on the lab leak stuff on Colbert. It's very easy for someone with no idea where to go to recontexualize to deflect, i think one of the big issues right now is where is that discussion being taken the most seriously. Because in the age of social media, the world's political ideology seems to stem around social media outlets with a "As little context as possible" model (Twitter) as the sounding rod for the vibe of society. I think as little content presented as possible does the self a disservice, it leaves things too open to interpretation without the opportunity for dicsussion. I left twitter, switched to rolling the dice in having conversations through comments and posts with more context, and it's freed me up to having a calmer mindset, making things that would normally scare me into something for me to understand and work with. And it's helped.

@Silver Specie Still more relevant than a nameless coward! 👍
"You sound like you're angry and full of rage, and yet you're really funny." That's not a surprise. That's the art form.

Laughter can be a coping mechanism for when it hurts too much to cry.

To answer John's question on emotions, there are only 5 PRIMARY emotions (all others are derivatives): Fear, Anger, Joy, Sadness, and, what's best defined as the emotion of experiencing 'sexual' energy--the feeling state of being "in love". And, 90% of the time, when we're experiencing Anger, it's actually just covering up a deeper Fear we're masking. So when angry, stop and ask yourself, "what is the fear behind my anger?" and we can learn a lot. It's also interesting to think about "time" relative to emotions: Sadness is a past-based emotion (sad about something that happened already). Anger and Joy are present-based emotions (Anger is because I'm not getting my way right now; Joy is because I'm getting what I want right now). Fear is a futures-based emotion (I'm afraid of something that could happen in the future). And as for Jon's gummies comment...he nailed it. ;)
