Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.
The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.
Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.
Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.
Watch the video to learn more about what happened!
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

This is a great video. Q. How far can the plane fly on one engine, at that speed and altitude? And could not return to the departure airport. Also, Was a fuel dump called for here?

A seven hours flight time probably does not carry much fuel for a overweight landing. That's why they did not perform jettison fuel...

After my wife heard about this she said that she didn't want to fly for a while. I told her that this makes me even more confident in air travel. After all a 2 engine plane had one blow apart while still climbing. A time when it still needed power. Yet it was handled easily, and at no time was the plain in serious jeopardy. To me this shows how well trained everyone involved is.

I would be so scared of the engine just falling off from burning that much. What would happen in that case? Does the plane lose its balance and stops it from flying stable?

Great explanation, factual and on key. I flew the 777 for 21 years at American as a Line CKA, over 17,000 hrs in type 200-300 great plane. Doodoo happens. Thats why we brief on every Takeoff, plan for an engine failure so there are no surprises. Every landing brief a Go Around that way again, No surprises. Look forward to following you.

This is why you cannot have unmanned ATC and autonomous pilotless aircraft with souls on board - people are able to respond to rapidly changing situations and innovate a creative solution to the problem. The cargo is not expendable.

Bravo Zulu\(^o^)/ How do you say ”Job well done" in German? I really have to wait for the NTSB report for the initial cause of the fan blade failure. Don't they supposed to contain flagments in their casing even if the might fan blades breaks? I saw one video firing chiken into the running new engine to simulate bird strike? Thank you (every time and always) for sharing your video.

Considering the engine was still burning upon landing, it is a VERY good thing this did not happen very near the ground (takeoff), or far out over the ocean.

The Denver Airport is one of the few I am familiar with. I am much more familiar with the old Stapleton. I spent a weekend there during the blizzard of 1982. This was a very interesting video. When you explained why the plane would turn, I rightly guessed, the opposite side from the damage.

Not a pilot but I do operate ground radios, You usually get your ear worked in to the missing pieces of info, you learn what words go where and can fill them in with context of what you did hear. After a few hours of it your brain just kinda clicks into gear and it just sounds like normal speech.

I can tell you exactly which checklist we would use. The one that popped on the center crt. The most urgent checklist auto populates folllowed by the less urgent checklist. By the way the one that they first used was the engine failure, severe damage checklist. This guy will make a fine training center pilot. Line pilot? Who knows?
